Five clinics in the New West Zone were shut down and 42 doctors were served notices for practising medicine not permitted by their degrees by health teams of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Thursday.
Those served notices include practitioners holding BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery), BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery), DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery), and RMP (Registered Medical Practitioner) certificates. The teams found five ‘doctors’ practising without degrees and closed down their clinics.
Similarly, teams served notices to 24 doctors in East Zone and 24 doctors in North Zone. On March 27, South Zone has served notices to 20 doctors and shut down one clinic for not following the notice.
Twenty doctors in South Zone were served notices on Tuesday. The team shut down one clinic for not following the orders issued by
the team.
“We go to the clinic and check their equipment and stock. Doctors who have been served notices were keeping injections, allopathic medicines, intravenous sets and bottles to administer to patients,” said incharge deputy medical officer of health, New West Zone.
Deputy Medical Officer (South Zone) Tejas Shah said, “Before serving notice to doctors, we checked their clinic and found that 21 were dispensing allopathic medicine even
though they did not have a degree to do so. We have served them notice to shut down their dispensary. We will keep checking these dispensaries and if they are found practising, we will seal it.”
East Zone health team sealed one clinic. Notices were also served to doctors in Vatva, Khokhra, Indrapuri, Behrampura, Maninagar, Lambha, Ghodasar and Kankaria.
Leader of Opposition in the AMC Badruddin Shaikh said, “This clearly shows negligence and inaction on
part of the municipal corporation and its officials. If they can find more than 100 quacks in 4-5 days, they can definitely locate more. The officials should become active and start taking action against such fake doctors.”
It should be noted that on March 13, Jodiya MLA Raghavji Patel had asked Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas about quacks in the city. In reply to his question, it was revealed that only 550 fake doctors were found in last 5 years and only 51 of them punished. The answer also stat
ed that of them, seven were declared innocent by the court and legal proceedings are on against 492 doctors.
Interestingly, in the last five years, only 22 fake doctors were found.

Notices have been served to doctors in East, North and South Zone as well. The teams have sealed one clinic in each of these zones for not following orders
