World COPD Day 2011:
– Opportunity for interview
Ahmedabad Medical Association and Cipla
Respiratory are organizers of World COPD Day, an annual global event
that aims to raise awareness of COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
the world’s fourth-leading killer.
World COPD Day 2011 is taking place on November 16
around the theme "Are you short of
breath? You may have COPD! Ask your doctor about a simple breathing test called
Spirometry."
This positive message raises awareness of spirometry as the gold
standard for diagnosis of COPD, and emphasizes the actions a person can take to
safeguard his or her lung health. Here we have targeted the Sabarmati Jail Inmates who
are suffering from the respiratory disease but still they haven’t got any
chance to tell the medical practitioners that “Yes We are short of breathe and
have a chronic respiratory problem”
According to
the World Health Organization, COPD afflicts some 50 million people around the
world, and kills nearly 3 million every year. Looking to the trend of the copd patients in
ahmedabad is round about 85000 individuals suffering from Smoking(Cigarette,
Chulla and hukka), Occupational hazards (Industrial and pollution). And
additional 10000 patients are adding
every year. In addition, COPD is greatly under-diagnosed, with recent
studies indicating that 25% to 50% of people with clinically significant COPD
don’t know they have the disease. However, a
simple, painless test, called spirometry, can determine whether or not a person
has COPD—even before they develop troublesome symptoms.
I believe
audience will want to hear more about COPD and the quick, easy test that can
diagnose it; though little-known, this life-threatening disease probably
affects someone they know. To help you bring this story alive for your readers,
I would like to offer you the opportunity to have a spirometry test at Sabarmati jail,
tomorrow 9 am. It would also be a pleasure to tell you more about
World COPD Day and our activities, the disease COPD, our organization, and the
spirometry awareness campaign. A story on November 16 would also strengthen our
awareness campaign.
